WHO WE ARE
THE FLUTE SYMPHONY
OF LEXINGTON HISTORY
Created by a flutist with a vision
in 2001, The Flute Symphony of Lexington has grown
from modest beginnings to become a recognized flute orchestra
in Lexington, Kentucky. FSL grew from a small ensemble to
being the nation's only multi-generational flute choir, and
by editing and arranging our music to fit all levels we were
able to include any flutist with a desire to play.
We have consistently grown in numbers,
as well as having grown musically. We now perform programs
comparable to concert flute choirs across the nation (with
young students!) and we enjoy performing with full flute choir
instrumentation. Highlight performances have included the
Cincinnati Art Museum, Hilbert Circle Theater and the ArtsGarden
in Indianapolis, as well as for the ArtsPlace Gallery Hop
in Lexington, KY, with the UNCA Flute Choir in Asheville,
NC, Centre College, Norton Center for the Arts, Danville,
KY, The Flute Society of Kentucky's Annual Festival in Richmond,
KY, and pre-concert performances for the Lexington Philharmonic
at the Singletary Center.
In
2007, FSL filed for status as a 501c3 Tax Exempt Organization.
We not only received a grant our first year as a non profit
group, but we were one of the only groups to receive an increase
in grant funding during our second year as non profit in 2009.
We plan to apply for more support at local, state and national
levels.
In 2008 The First Annual Les
Smart Scholarship Competition was launched! Middle school
and high school students from Kentucky and surrounding states
were encouraged to participate in this two-round event. Three
finalists in each age group were chosen to perform for the
judges in Lexington, KY. All six finalists received cash prizes
donated by long time FSL Member Les Smart. The first place
winners performed as featured soloists with the Flute Symphony,
in concert that afternoon. The Second Annual Les Smart Scholarship
Competition is scheduled for Spring, 2011.
The MISSION of The Flute Symphony
of Lexington (FSL) is
to maintain a multigenerational flute ensemble in a friendly
and supportive environment that provides the highest quality
of musical performance throughout the Lexington community.
The core values of FSL center around performance, education,
music, friendship, and accessibility: to preserve music through
public presentation, to promote musical education by introducing
the young people of our community to the wonders of orchestral
music, and to make such music accessible to all residents
of our community and surrounding communities.
