2008 Educational Opportunities Fife Course FSL will present a Fife Class on Saturday, March 29, from 12-1:00pm. Instructed by Courtney Jespersen, the class will focus on beginning fife playing, with the traditional, six-hole military fifes in Bb that were popular in the Civil War era. Courtney will discuss basic tone production, fingerings, articulations and how the fife is similar to yet very different from the modern concert flutes that FSL normally features. Courtney Jespersen is a sophomore music education major at Asbury College in Wilmore, KY. As a flutist from New England, she has years of expertise as both a performer and teacher of the military fife (both the 6 and 10 hole models). FSL members who complete the Fife Class will be eligible to perform in the Fife Corp, which will feature Civil War tunes at all of our 2008 spring and summer programs. |

Foster Music Camp, held at EKU in June, is open to middle and high school students. OSU FLUTE WORKSHOP June 15 - 19, 2008 The Ohio University School of Music In its 32nd year, the annual Flute Workshop for High School students provides private lessons, technique classes, master classes, twice daily coached small ensembles, solo night, recitals and concerts that include all participants. Other activities that will improve the student's knowledge and abilities as a musician are included. Participants will experience college firsthand for four days with other students who share similar interests. Ensemble coaches are current and past OSU flute majors. Katherine Borst Jones plays a full opening night recital and teaches all master classes. The workshop fee includes all instruction, housing, a workshop T-shirt and photograph. The workshop is open to all high school flutists, including those entering the ninth grade in 2008. I highly recommend all of the events. Several have open registration- meaning space is filled first-come, first-serve (no audition). There are other events around the country, both open and by audition- I have information in my studio for anyone wanting to see the possibilities. June - Forms due for Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra auditions; music is mailed upon receipt of forms. Open to all students through grade 12. Summer 2008:
Fall 2008 Will see new projects beginning, including: “EARLY BIRD” class for less experienced players, led by Asbury music majors Courtney Jespersen and Hope Tumblin, where our younger and newer folks can get extra attention. (Mentors can help!) Rehearsals will again be structured with simpler pieces first, to incorporate these members, and then progressing to advanced pieces later in the morning. November: Recordings due for first round FSK competitions November 20-22: All-Star Band Clinic Weekend, Asbury College. High School students experience dorm living, an honor band ensemble and sectionals with Asbury music professors. |

2007 Educational Opportunities January 2007: Applications due for the Kentucky Governor's Scholar Program, open to high school students (music study is available, auditions are held in March). January 2007: The Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp is now accepting applications for the summer of 2007. Middle and high schools students are eligible to participate in a week-long camp on the campus of EKU, working with renown flutist Kristen Kean in lessons, flute choir, band and orchestra. Theory and history will also be presented for a full-spectrum musical education. 2006 Educational Opportunities On January 14, The Flute Society of Kentucky held their annual festival in Louisville. Several members of the LFP attended. March 7, at 8pm - Norton Center, at Centre College in Danville, KY. Sir James and Lady Galway in concert! Sir James and Lady Galway, who are extraordinary flutists, will perform an all-Mozart program with the Polish Chamber Orchestra. April - The Foster Music Camp is now accepting applications. Forms are due in June for The Foster Summer Music Camp held at EKU. The camp is open to middle school and high school musicians.
June - Cincinnati Flute Symposium; observe masterclasses and recitals by some of the world's most esteemed flutists. June- Forms due for Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra auditions; music is mailed upon receipt of forms. Open to all students through grade 12. July- Audition music is available for the Flute Society of Kentucky competitions. August- Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra auditions held August; Pittsburgh, PA - National Flute Convention. There are several Lexington flutists planning to make the journey for four fun-filled days of fabulous fluting.
